“At the call of “3, 2, 1 … go,” the athlete will have 8 minutes to perform 3 rounds of 6 chest-to-bar pull-ups and 6 squat snatches, AND 3 rounds of 7 chest-to-bar pull-ups and 5 squat snatches…”
Sounds easy, right? Sure.
For the Pike13 competitors, it was the greatest test of strength so far.
“It was heavy,” Jesse Goodnoe says of workout 17.3. “Too heavy. And more tiring than I was expecting. But I’m glad I signed up for the Open, and I’d do it again. It’s made me realize how much harder I need to be working in my regular workouts.”
At the halfway mark, Jesse is ranked 815th out of 23,924 competitors in his division.
“17.3 was a fun one!” says Jake. “It was one of those workouts that doesn’t necessarily tax your lungs, but plays a huge role on how strong your mental game is. My all time 1 rep max snatch is #265, but due to an elbow injury 2 weeks before the open, I told myself I would be ecstatic to even hit #185 in the workout. I hadn’t snatched at all since my injury, so mentally I was a little intimidated. Overall, I was happy to get to have gotten to that last round of #185 snatches before my time ran out. This one was a one and done for me! On to 17.4!”
After two weeks of workouts, the third Pike13 competitor, Dawn Hager, has a good reason for not completing 17.3. Dawn and her husband welcomed their son into the world last week. The whole family is doing well and we’re thrilled to welcome the youngest member of our Pike13 family. Dawn certainly isn’t giving up CrossFit competitions though — she says she’ll be back next year.
There are two workouts left in this year's CrossFit Open. Workout 17.4 will be announced tonight. Check back next week to see Jake's and Jesse's progress as they snatch, squat, lunge and lift their way to the summer Games.
