How I got started: Getting better, faster

Movement Rx combines physical therapy, human performance, and movement education in 1-on-1, small class, and workshop settings. Like many innovative companies, we got our start out of frustration with the status quo. In our case, it was exasperation with the limited patient gains and utter lack ofreal customer service found in traditional high-volume physical therapy clinics. My wife, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, knew she could improve people's recovery outside of the clinic. My background as an entrepreneur helped me see the opportunity to scale such a business to meet an enormous unmet demand.

We started with a mission of helping people get better, faster. Achieving this has required one part mini-revolution in treatment paradigms, one part optimizing practitioner skill, and one part client motivation. We’re fundamentally driven by the belief that people—not any health practitioner—should be the stewards of their own health.

We also believe that movement is medicine. The simplest way to manifest this is through a commitment to client education and useful easy-to-use tools that empower clients to perform basic maintenance on themselves. It also means being courageous enough to try novel and less conservative treatment programs.

Our doctors of physical therapy are movement and mobility experts with a variety of functional fitness-based certifications. They combine client education, extraordinary manual therapy skills, and guided aggressive exercises to achieve in 3–4 visits what often takes 12–20 visits in a traditional clinic. They’re also human performance coaches who can then train recovered athletes to maximize their potential in the sports and activities they engage in. Because we provide services in the environments where our clients are already training, it’s easy to keep clients motivated, reinforce programming compliance, and accelerate improvements and recovery.

EVCF SeminarThe approach and results have attracted wonderful clients who have referred us to their friends and colleagues over and over again. We’ve grown from a single therapist working at a single CrossFit box in Coronado last summer into a talented team providing movement education, treatment, and training services to over 20 CrossFit boxes from San Diego to Los Angeles, plus corporations, the US Navy, and police and fire departments across the region.

Because we have a business model that doesn’t fit any traditional healthcare model, we needed to look outside traditional clinic software for a scheduling and client management tool. We chose Pike13 because of its flexibility, ease-of-use, and revenue-based cost structure. We’ve stayed with Pike13 because of its customer service.

As we continue to grow into other regions and services, we’ll need increased flexibility from our scheduling and service management tool. We fully expect that we can continue to rely on Pike13 to grow with us.
