Have you ever googled a business on your phone and then quickly realized its website was nearly impossible to find your way around? Maybe you clicked the result for a local yoga studio, found the schedule tab, and then scrolled all over the screen to try to find class timesand instructors. Maybe you had to pinch and expand the screen with your fingers to adjust the text size so you could actually read it.
Result? Frustration.
More and more of your website visitors are finding you just this way and wanting to interact with your business from a mobile device. If the first interaction is a frustrating one, the likelihood of them becoming your customer decreases. Even if they overcome their frustration and use your services, you start your relationship from a deficit.
The mobile trend is undoubtedly growing with half of all people in the U.S. owning smartphones. What do they want? From Google Survey Reveals What Users Want From Mobile Sites (Marketing Land, September 25, 2012):
- Two-thirds of smartphone users are more likely to buy or convert after a visit to a mobile-friendly site, while the opposite is also true of a non-mobile-friendly site: 61 percent say they’ll “move on.”
- 55 percent said a frustrating experience on a (mobile) website would hurt the perception of their brand
